Made the Market

Some peoples’ favorite season is summer. Other people like winter, fall, or spring. My favorite season is Hudson Farmers Market season. It is a great time to go out, enjoy the town, and support your local businesses. This year, it ran from June 5th to October 19th, every Saturday from 9:00AM to 12:30PM. It takes place on the green between the clocktower and the gazebo.

With live music, face painting, and the apple press, the Hudson Farmers Market is a popular spot for local residents and their families. This Farmers Market was officially established in 2007 by Leadership Hudson. In 2020, they offered a $1,000 scholarship for graduating seniors in Hudson who planned to go into an agriculture-related field.

The Hudson Farmers Market offers fresh, locally grown produce, which varies seasonally. This year, they have had tomatoes, apples, turnips, bell peppers, lettuce, and more. Featured just last weekend was Quiroz Family Farm, based in Salem, Ohio. They sold apples, cauliflower, green beans, pears, lettuce, cabbage, bell peppers and cucumbers.

My favorite, the apples, were the size of two of my fists put together. I have been eating them all week. Since fall is apple season, a lot of produce vendors are selling them. Therefore, fall is a perfect time for Dr. Borrmann’s cider press. There is an old fashioned wooden cider press that he brings out to the Farmers Market for a couple weekends a season so that people can make fresh apple cider! The press is relatively easy to use- perfect for people of all ages and sizes. The cider is ready to be enjoyed immediately after it comes out of the press- and it’s absolutely delicious! It has a taste that is very unique and different from the apple cider that you may buy at the grocery store. The sweetness varies depending on the apples used in each batch, but every cup is equally smooth and enjoyable. The apple press is just one of the many possible uses for the produce available at the Market.

For people who aren’t looking for produce, there are also usually sweet treats baked by family-owned companies, locally grown flowers and coffee, hand-poured candles, and even handmade accessories and homegoods. The vendors are very friendly and put a lot of effort into their products.

Did you buy a lot of produce and don’t know how to put it to good use? The Hudson Farmers Market website features many different recipes. These recipes suit people with many different dietary needs and restrictions: vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc. The Hudson Farmers Market was a big hit this year! Many students at Western Reserve Academy took trips to the Hudson Farmers Market every weekend. Although this season is unfortunately over, it is definitely worth a visit next time you can make it!
